Malta does not have a long list of Greek restaurants, which makes this easier than it looks. We took every venue on the island that is publicly listed under Greek food on Google Maps (or is a dedicated gyros and souvlaki kitchen with a public record), kept the ones that were trading on the day we checked, and then read what each one actually is: taverna, gyros counter, meze café or beach club.

Pita baked through the day, meat marinated for twelve hours, and everything cooked to order on the grill — this is the Greek kitchen on the busiest street in St Julian's, and the one that keeps cooking after the rest of Paceville closes. Gyros from €9, the skepasti (pressed double pita with meat and melted cheese) at €12, the mix grill for two at €44. Open Sunday to Thursday 12:00–00:00 and Friday to Saturday 12:00–04:00. Gyros is meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie and shaved into a pita with tzatziki, tomato, onion and chips. Souvlaki is skewered meat cooked over charcoal — pork or chicken in a pita, or as a plate with sides. Both are on every Greek menu in this list; at Kreta the pita gyro is €9, the souvlaki pita €8.50 and the souvlaki plate €15.50.

For gyros and pita, no — walk in. For a sit-down taverna on a weekend, yes: Manakis, YIAMAS, MYKONOS and Opa! all fill their good tables between 20:00 and 21:30, so book the same day at the latest. Kreta takes reservations for the terrace and also cooks until 4AM, which is the alternative to booking.
